Man at crossroads

Community pharmacists play a crucial role in providing frontline healthcare services, and the Pharmacy First service is a designed to support this. To support pharmacists in delivering this service to patients and help ensure that they meet the gateway criteria for payment, we have created a short learning module which covers navigating patients’ eligibility and consultation fees. We have also created a downloadable resource designed to help pharmacists capture all relevant information during patient consultations efficiently and effectively.

The Pharmacy First service offers an accessible avenue for patients to receive consultation for seven common minor ailments. As a pharmacist, understanding the eligibility and gateway criteria is crucial to ensure that patients receive timely care, and that you can secure the fees.

Features of the learning module:

  • Understanding patient eligibility
Provides a quick age-range summary for patients who would be eligible for the service.
  • Gateway criteria for service provision
Covers ensuring your consultation adheres to the clinical pathways associated with the Pharmacy First Service, making appropriate records, and administering the correct treatment or advice.
  • Documentation and record-keeping best practices
Effective documentation and record-keeping are critical components of the Pharmacy First Service, ensuring both compliance with the NHS standards, and the delivery of patient-centered care.
  • Reimbursement and funding clarifications
Effective financial management under the Pharmacy First Service hinges on a comprehensive grasp of the claiming procedures, the structured funding approach, and the specifics of medication reimbursement.

The Pharmacy First service empowers community pharmacists to deliver essential care for minor ailments. Our learning module and downloadable resource guide pharmacists through eligibility, consultation fees, and effective documentation, ensuring compliance with NHS standards and securing reimbursement. This support enables pharmacists to provide high-quality, patient-centered care efficiently.
